The Challenge Facing Indian CSR Teams

India's mandatory CSR framework under Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013 requires every company with a net worth of ₹500 crore or more, or turnover of ₹1,000 crore or more, or net profit of ₹5 crore or more, to spend at least 2% of average net profits on approved CSR activities. The Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduced in December 2025, proposes to extend this obligation to mid-sized companies with net worth of ₹100 crore, turnover of ₹500 crore, or net profit of ₹3 crore — dramatically expanding the number of companies that must comply.

Despite the scale of India's CSR ecosystem — estimated at ₹30,000 crore in annual spend across 24,000 eligible companies — most CSR teams in 2024 were still managing this complexity using Excel spreadsheets, email chains with NGOs, and manually compiled annual reports. The consequences were predictable: delayed CSR-2 filings, unspent funds transferred under penalty provisions, incomplete BRSR disclosures, and impact assessment reports that described activity rather than outcome.
